Consulting Associate Professor, Stanford University and Cofounder of eHuman.com and Brown & Herbranson Imaging. Clinical Assistant Professor, University of the Pacific and UCSF Schools of Dentistry. He has been the Principal Investigator on 8 NIH grants involved with medical imaging, virtual reality and simulations. Brown was in the private practice of clinical endodontics in Palo Alto, California for 27 years. Since 1982 he has been the endodontist for the San Francisco Zoo and Marine World/Africa USA where he has developed highly specialized endodontic instruments as well as performed endodontic and oral surgery procedures on exotic animals. He has given numerous presentations on endodontics and has participated in programs for National Geographic and The Learning Channel. He was the principal investigator for a research project for Alara Corp., Hayward, CA producing a comprehensive comparison of dental digital x-ray systems. He is a Fellow of the American College of Dentists and the International College of Dentists.

Eric Herbranson, BS, MS,DDS
Vice President of Education

Co-founder of Brown & Herbranson Imaging
Eric Herbranson has more than 30 years experience in clinical endodontics, teaching, and image production. He is actively involved in professional photography and has been published in numerous national and regional periodicals and dental textbooks. In the last few years he has transitioned his interest in photography to digital imaging; he has gained expertise in the technical side of both digital imaging and imaging software for the computer. He has developed and taught courses on conventional and digital photography with the surgical operating microscope. He is an assistant professor (adjunct) at the University of the Pacific, School of Dentistry in San Francisco where his responsibilities include developing and giving lectures on endodontics. He has also lectured extensively to both general dental audiences and specialty audiences on microscope photography, new technology in dentistry, and the use of computers in presentations. He has an ongoing interest in dental anatomy and is the co-author of the chapter on tooth anatomy in, Pathways of the Pulp, edition 7 and 8.

Bob Austrian
Chief Executive Officer

Mr. Austrian joined Brown & Herbranson Imaging in 2007 as the company's first Chief Executive Officer and independent Director. A seasoned software and investment executive, Austrian spent 20 years on Wall Street, first as a software engineer and systems analyst and, later, as a sell-side analyst at Lehman Brothers, Morgan Stanley and Banc of America Securities where he was a Managing Director. Mr. Austrian was recognized in 2001 by The Wall Street Journal as the #1 U.S. analyst in the Enterprise Software sector, testified before Congress concerning the Y2K and software security issues, and is a leading industry authority who focused on the business strategies of applications companies including Siebel, SAP, Microsoft, Oracle and others. His background includes extensive education and philanthropy in the field of Astronomy, and Board seats on both publicly-traded and private 501(c)-3 corporations. Mr. Austrian earned a B.A. in Economics from Colgate University, and an M.B.A. with Honors, in Finance, from the Stern School of Business at New York University.

Bruce B. Fogel, DDS, FICD, FACD

Bruce Fogel is senior author of the 3-D Tooth Atlas, a clinician, and an instructor. A fellow of the International College of Dentists and of the American College of Dentists, he was in private practice limited to endodontics in Menlo Park and Mountain View, CA. Dr. Fogel is director of the endodontic surgery clinic and is clinical professor of endodontics at Pacific School of Dentistry, San Francisco. He also teaches endodontic surgery at the Veterans' Administration Hospital, Palo Alto, CA. A graduate of the Harvard University/Forsyth Dental Center post-doctorate endodontic program and of UCLA School of Dentistry, Dr. Fogel publishes on endodontic surgery and materials and lectures nationally and internationally on endodontics and the application of 3-D imaging to clinical practice.

Kevin Montgomery, Ph.D.
Chief Technology Officer

Technical Director, National Biocomputation Center, Stanford
Technical direction of research institute involved in segmentation, 3D reconstruction, visualization and simulation of medical data. Projects include a Virtual Environment for Reconstructive Surgery, a system for surgical planning and analysis, a microsurgery training simulator, as well as managing collaborations involving intraoperative bone placement, medical education and training, and medical research. Dr. Montgomery received his Ph.D. in Computer Engineering from the University of California at Santa Cruz. He has 12 years of technical experience in 3D reconstruction, medical imaging, computer graphics, virtual reality, distributed systems design, image processing, and systems design. In addition, he has 6 years of project management experience. Dr. Montgomery is currently the technical director of the National Biocomputation Center, a joint NASA-Stanford institute for applying advanced computational and visualization technologies for medicine and surgery. The center's main areas of research include virtual environments for surgical planning and analysis, intra-operative surgical assistance, and visualization for medical training/education. Before joining the Institute, Dr. Montgomery was the project manager of the Biocomputation Center at the NASA Ames Research Center. He joined this center at its inception in 1991 and provided the technical expertise for its early work in 3D reconstruction. He created the ROSS serial-section 3D reconstruction software system which is currently in use by over 30 research laboratories nationwide. As a collaboration with the Stanford Medical School formed, his research shifted to 3D reconstruction of volumetric data from CT and MR. He later produced the Virtual Environment for Reconstructive Surgery (VERS) and it was on the basis of this work that the National Biocomputation Center was formed by NASA and Stanford in 1998. Dr Montgomery has published over 29 technical papers in 3D reconstruction, visualization, telemedicine, and image processing and has 4 patents pending in telemedicine and medical imaging.

Robert Cheng
Research Assistant, Stanford University

Robert has been involved in several projects at Stanford, working with the SUMMIT (Stanford University Medical Media and Information Technologies) lab and the Biomechanical Engineering department. The projects include: studying spinal fixation devices, creating 3D models of the knee, developing a simulation for finger biomechanics, working with applications for the NGI (Next Generation Internet), and developing haptics applications. His interests include the biomechanics of human motion and computer animation and modeling. Robert received a BS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin and a MS in Biomechanical Engineering from Stanford University.

Robert W. Hasel, D.D.S.

Dr. Hasel graduated from the University of Minnesota, School of Dentistry in 1972. In addition to his 35 years of dental practice, Bob has been a part-time faculty member at the University of Minnesota for 30 years, and a full-time faculty member at the Arizona School of Dentistry & Oral Health from 2004-2006 where he was responsible for developing the Restorative Dentistry curriculum and running the preclinical course. In 2006 Dr. Hasel joined Midwestern University to help build the brand new Midwestern College of Dental Medicine. During his career Dr. Hasel has traveled extensively teaching clinical dentistry and owns several patents, one of which involves the use of a flowable resin composite restorative material that is in common use in dentistry today. Bob is also an avid golfer and enjoys bike riding and exercise.

Dr. Charles J. Goodacre
Dean, Loma Linda University

Dr. Goodacre received his DDS degree from Loma Linda University School of Dentistry in 1971. He completed a three year combined program in Prosthodontics and Dental Materials at Indiana University School of Dentistry and in 1974 earned his MSD degree. He began full-time teaching at Indiana University School of Dentistry in 1974 and has three times received awards from senior dental classes as the outstanding clinical instructor or outstanding lecturer. He served as Chairman of the Department of Prosthodontics at Indiana University, and currently is Dean of the Loma Linda University School of Dentistry. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Prosthodontics, Past-President of the American Board of Prosthodontics, a Fellow of the Academy of Prosthodontists, Fellow of the American College of Prosthodontists, and holds membership in the American Academy of Fixed Prosthodontics. He was co-author of the 4th edition of the textbook, Johnston’s Modern Practice in Fixed Prosthodontics, and served as an Editor of the International Journal of Prosthodontics.

Michael Flynn, Ph.D.

Michael Flynn is a radiological scientist with 25 years of experience in medical imaging. He is employed as a Bioscientific professor in the research institute of Henry Ford Health Systems and teaches in the Nuclear Engineering and Radiological Science program at the University of Michigan. His research is directed at X-ray imaging methods for radiography and tomography. Current research on very high-resolution micro-tomography for the evaluation of bone specimens is supported by NIH (NCRR R21-RR13347, NIAMS R01-AR47994).

Keiko Watanabe, DDS, Ph.D

Dr. Keiko Watanabe received a doctor of dental surgery degree and graduated as valedictorian of her class from the University of the Pacific, Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry in 2007. Dr. Watanabe received a DDS and PhD degree from Osaka Dental University in Japan and earned a specialty in pediatric dentistry, prior to entering the International Dental Studies program at Pacific. Dr. Watanabe has also received numerous accolades for her academic accomplishments, including being inducted into Omicron Kappa Upsilon’s national dental honor society and being named to Who’s Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities. She also received Pacific’s Herbert K. Yee Scholarship Award and was inducted into Pacific’s Tau Kappa Omega dental honor society. Dr. Watanabe practiced in Osaka for a total of 8 years. During her time as a practicing dentist she supervised several dentists while managing her family’s dental business. Dr. Watanabe has authored or co-authored several publications that can be found in such journals as the Japanese Society of Pediatric Dentistry and the Japanese Society of Dentistry for People with Disability. In her leisure time, Dr. Watanabe enjoys playing piano, traveling and spending time with her family.

Charles McNeill, DDS, FACD, FACD

Dr. Charles McNeill is a Professor Emeritus and the Director of the Center for Orofacial Pain at the University of California, San Francisco. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orofacial Pain and a Fellow of the American College of Dentists and the International College of Dentists. He is a member and former President of both the American Academy of Restorative Dentistry and American Academy of Orofacial Pain and is a past-editor of the Journal of Orofacial Pain. He has authored many articles, abstracts and book chapters, edited four books and lectured extensively on the subjects of TMD, orofacial pain and occlusion. Dr. McNeill formerly maintained a private practice for 27 years and presently maintains a private orofacial pain practice at UCSF.

Dr. Ove A. Peters

Dr. Peters received his degree in Dentistry (Dr. med dent) from the University of Kiel, Germany, in 1990 After spending two years in the Department of Neurophysiology at the University of Kiel, he has served as an assistant professor in prosthodontics at the University of Heidelberg, Germany, from 1993 to 1996. He received his endodontic training at Zurich University Dental School, Switzerland, from 1997 to 2001 and was an assistant professor and head of the faculty practice in restorative dentistry at the University of Zurich from 1996 to 2001, spending his time teaching, giving CE courses next to participating in the faculty practice. His main scientific interests relate to the performance of Nickel-Titanium rotary root canal instruments tested by micro-computed tomography and torque-testing devices, which is also the topic of his PD thesis. Dr. Peters has published extensively in international journals and lectured both nationally and internationally. He moved to the US in 2001 to attend UC San Francisco and while teaching undergraduate and postgraduate endodontics, he received and MS in Oral Biology. His favourite acitivies outside the endodontic world include traveling and all sorts of outdoor sports together with his wife.

Blaine Cleghorn, DMD MSc

Blaine received his Doctor of Dental Medicine degree and a Master of Science degree specializing in Oral Microbiology from the University of Manitoba. After five years of full-time private practice, he has been involved in the teaching of Dental Anatomy and Operative Dentistry for approximately 20 years. He is currently an Associate Professor and Director of Clinics at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Blaine has been nominated for a number of teaching awards and has received the WW Wood award for excellence in dental education, the Dean's Award for Excellence in Pre-Clinical Teaching to 1st and 2nd Year Students and an Award for Innovative Excellence in Teaching, Learning and Technology. He has an interest in and has developed award-winning interactive teaching software in dental anatomy.

Rebecca L. Slayton, DDS, PhD

Dr. Slayton is a board certified Pediatric Dentist and a diplomat of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry. She received her D.D.S. degree in 1992, a certificate in Pediatric Dentistry and a Ph.D. in Genetics in 1998, all from the University of Iowa. She had a faculty appointment at the University of Iowa, College of Dentistry for four years. Dr. Slayton served as Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Pediatric Dentistry at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) from August 2002 until March 2004 when she joined the faculty at the University of Washington in Seattle. She is the Director of the Early Childhood Oral Health Program at the University of Washington. She treats patients in the Pediatric Dentistry clinic, teaches pre-doctoral students and residents in the clinics and lectures to third year dental students and residents. She serves as the Region X Head Start Oral Health Consultant.
Dr. Slayton has a grant from the National Institute for Dental and Craniofacial Research to investigate the genetics of dental caries susceptibility.

Diana Babikian

Diana Babikian completed a degree in Human Biology with an Area of Concentration in Health Policy at Stanford University. She interned at the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research in Bethesda, MD and focused her research on the federal regulation of tobacco. She will pursue her dental degree at the University of the Pacific School of Dentistry in 2011.

Siddharth Vora. B.D.S.

Siddharth completed his Dental degree (BDS) from Nair Hospital Dental College, MUMBAI, India in 2002. He came to Boston University in 2003 and joined the Dept. of Oral Biology and Periodontology to obtain a PhD. His research interests are in bone biology, particularly in bone formation. Currently, he is working on the propeptide domain of the enzyme: lysyl oxidase, and is studying it's effects on bone cell proliferation and differentiation. Siddharth hopes to obtain a clinical degree in orthodontics, continue with research and teach.

Tanya M. Smith, PhD
Biological Anthropologist

Tanya is a Biological Anthropologist specializing in living and fossil human and primate tooth development and structure. She completed her PhD at Stony Brook University in 2004 on the incremental development of primate dental enamel. Subsequently she served as the co-founder and coordinator of the Dental Tissues Working Group in the Department of Human Evolution at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology (MPI-EVA) in Leipzig, Germany. Members of the Dental Tissues Working Group employ high resolution micro-computed tomography to study the internal and external shape and development of dental tissues. This also includes the application of synchrotron X-ray imaging undertaken at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility in Grenoble, France. Tanya currently has a faculty appointment in the Department of Anthropology at Harvard University and an affiliation at the MPI-EVA. Her research continues to explore the fundamental nature of tooth growth and structure, as well as the evolution of the unique prolonged pattern of dental growth and development that characterizes our own species.

Dr. Ralf J. Radlanski

Dr. Ralf J. Radlanski is Professor and Head of the Dept. of Craniofacial Developmental Biology at the Charité Center for Dental and Craniofacial Sciences, Campus Benjamin Franklin at Freie Universität Berlin, Germany. He studied medicine and dentistry at the Universities of Göttingen (Germany) and Minneapolis (MN, USA). After postgraduate educations in anatomy, embryology, and orthodontics at the University of Göttingen, he came to Berlin in 1992. His main research interest is the visualisation of prenatal craniofacial development in 3D. He was a National Delegate in the Management Board of the European COST B23 action “Craniofacial Morphogenesis” and Chairman of the Working Group „Development and Evolution“ from 2003 – 2008. From 1999 to 2008 Dr. Radlanski has served as Managing Director of the dental clinic at the University Clinic Benjamin Franklin of Freie Universität Berlin. Together with Frans van der Linden and James McNamara jr., Ralf J. Radlanski is a co-author of “Dynamics of Orthodontics”, a 3D animated visualisation of craniofacial growth and orthodontic treatment on DVD. In 1995, Dr. Radlanski has been President of the 10th International Symposium On Dental Morphology in Berlin, and in 2010, he will be President of the 10th Symposium of Tooth Morphogenesis and Differentiation in Berlin.
